A String of Summer Memories
A string of summer memories
That slip like beads on a thread
And lace my days with remembrances of . . .
Eating berries from a tangle,
The juice dark and sweet.
And dusty roads stretching before me
And melting away beyond the bend–beckoning.
And oh, that summer heat!
Memories of feet singking into oozing mud,
Cool, refreshing and sticky.
Grasshopers jumping as I pass.
Rows of sweet corn standing tall,
And sparrows in the grass.
Ferning wooded places
Echoing with bird song
Among the mossy shakes.
Of riding bikes on roads long,
And chains of flowers for my neck
That soon wilt, die, and are gone.
Memories of swinging so very high
That I thought I was touching the roof of the sky.
Of swimmingin the creek ’til I’m blue with cold
And eating cherry pie.
Climbing trees,
And tearing skin off my knees.
Of lightening bugs
Resting in my hand like glowing stars.
Picnics that never end.
And eveinging showers–cool and wet
Rain soaking my skin
As I lift my face to Heaven’s dew.
A string of summer memories
Boxed up and stored
In the attic of my mind.

I LOVE the watercolor and the poem. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want summer back!!! And to think soon there will be snow!
Great poem and painting, Danielle! Really captures elements of summer!
Sweet images (except for the grasshoppers. They creep me out.)
Ah, the bliss of summer. Love your details.
great poem
Great poem and watercolor. I love watercolors I am just terrible at them.
Oh, the tears are flowing; I remember the first time I read this. Brings back so many memories. Judith and I walked through a pile of the little flowers growing wild along the wooded path just the other day. I miss you girl. Love Mama
